Just
a week after bragging about having two of the top ten corners in the league
with newly acquired DeAngelo Williams and Nnamdi Asomugha, the Oakland Raiders
let out a rumor that they may not be able to afford both. That's a rather odd move considering that as
a result of bringing in Williams, the Raiders may be forced to ship out
Asomugha, who is younger and more talented.
Regardless,
this news brings about opportunities for teams around the league. At the moment, only the Giants have announced
their interest, claiming that they would be willing to trade for the 26-year
old cornerback if the Raiders cut ties with him.
Of
course, that doesn't mean the Giants are the only applicable team for
Asomugha. In fact, the Buccaneers have
both the need and the means to bring him to Tampa. Oddly enough, the Bucs were pursuing DeAngelo
Williams before he was sent to Oakland, so there is a chance that their
inability to close the deal may turn out for the better.
The
team has the money to throw at Asomugha, and, with the departure of Brian Kelly
and the aging of Ronde Barber, a definite need for his talents. The only problem is that it isn't a potential
free agent signing that we're talking about here, as the Raiders wouldn't be so
daft as to release a player of his caliber without getting anything in return. The Giants have the talent to strike up a
deal for Asomugha, but do the Buccaneers?
Money
isn't a problem, but will general manager Bruce Allen be willing to trade away
his first-round draft pick or possibly a second-rounder and some players as
well? If I were him, I'd pull the
trigger on that deal, as this year's draft is weak in the positions that the
Bucs need the most. So instead of
spending that valued twentieth pick on a player that probably isn't worth the
salary he'll make, why not give it to someone else in exchange for a proven
young talent at a position of great need?
It
makes sense to me, but that doesn't always mean it does to the Bucs.
Besides,
at just 26 years old, Asomugha is pretty close to a draft pick anyway. Essentially, the Bucs would be getting a
player with the youth of a draft pick that has already transcending the professional
sports learning curve.
